Comfrey has a long history and has been included in every Materia Medica written since the 15th century. The herb is still used to make salves, ointments and poultices for topical use because of the high degree of mucilage present in the leaf. Due to the presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids, comfrey leaf is limited to topical uses today but should not be applied to open wounds.
Comfrey has a long history of use as a topical anti-inflammatory agent, usually prepared as a poultice. However, because the leaf and root contain several hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids, the internal use of this herb is limited to homeopathic formulations. Comfrey was once used to treat respiratory problems of pleurisy and bronchial inflammation and digestive problems such as irritable bowel syndrome and stomach ulcers.
Comfrey is a natural anti-inflammatory and cell-proliferant. Historically it has been used for various injuries and infections: broken bones, sprains, strains, bruises. It has been said to be helpful with acne, psoriasis, and boils as well as reduction of scar tissue during the healing process.  The root and aerial parts are all rich in anti-inflammatory chemicals.

– It is a source of allantoin, a compound in the cosmetics industry.
